A Family Affair: pining, self-discovery, and the need for closure

A Family Affair is essentially a book about pining, self-discovery, and the need for closure. Cal is still pining for Andrew after a disappointing ending to a...not-really-relationship. Three and a half years after Andrew ditches him, Cal is finally thinking he's got his life back on track. Which is, of course, the perfect time for Andrew to show back up and derail that train. The story jumps back and forth between the present and the past in an effort to slowly give the details and add to the mystery of what actually happened between Cal and Andrew.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much time spent on the relationship and practically no dialogue between the two - just a lot of fade to black. This led me to really be annoyed and not understanding AT ALL about why Cal was so into this dude! Eventually, it becomes clear it isn't so much about Andrew at all. Rather mostly about Cal and his internal struggles. And then you want to just give him a hug and let him know it'll all be okay.

While this book has its fair share of angst and frustration, there are also some wonderfully funny and sweet moments. There were a few points while reading that I laughed out loud and even did some fist-pumping. I've not read anything else written by Rob Loveless before, but I would recommend this book.
